Dimapur, Jan. 31 (EMN): The Naga Research Scholars’ Forum (NRSF), University of Hyderabad organised Dr. I Sentitemsu Imsong annual memorial lecture on Jan. 25 at the Zakir Hussain Lecture Hall Complex in Hyderabad.
During the inaugural lecture, PhD scholar Riku Khutso in his introductory note said that NRSF exist to facilitate a platform and an ambiance for academic engagement among the Naga scholars and students in the university.
Khutso highlighted some events organised by the NRSF which included national seminar on ‘Discoursing the shifts in the Naga society of North-East India’ in 2016; monthly academic symposiums that are being held regularly over the last couple of years; and Dr. Imsong annual memorial lecture has been the one of the major plans of NRSF for 2018.
The memorial lecture originally was an extension of an idea of having an annual distinguished lecture series in the university. However, he said the NRSF feels that Dr. Imsong deserves the honour of being memorialized through the distinguished lecture series in his name considering the prolific scholarship he left behind and illustrious life he lived.
The scholar also briefed about the journey of Dr. Imsong and his attachment to Hyderabed and university which made the initiative of NRSF to organise his memorial lecture.
“Dr. Imsong was basically from Mokokchung, an outstanding particle physicist; he received his PhD degree at the age of 27 from the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore (IISc). His PhD thesis titled “Improvement on Hardonic Form Factors using Analyticity and Unitary Constraints,” was awarded the best thesis in Theoretical Physics at IISc for the year 2012. Going back to his academic profile, he was a topper in both HSLC and HSSLC examinations (NBSE), and secured the gold medal in Physics (B.Sc.) under Nagaland University (2006). He completed M.Sc. Physics from the University of Hyderabad (2008), and joined PhD at the Centre for High Energy Physics, IISc, Bangalore (2008). Thereafter, he completed threePost-Doctoral Studies at theUniversity of Siegen, Germany (2013-14), Ben Gurion University, Israel (2014-15), and theInstitute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai (2015). Lt. Dr. Sentitemsu Imsong was selected as an Assistant Professor both at IIT Guwahati, and IIT Hyderabad just before his tragic demise,” the press release stated.
The inaugural memorial lecture was delivered by Prof. B Ananthanarayan, chairman and prof. Centre for High Energy Physics, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, also the former PhD research supervisor of Dr. Imsong.
The prof. spoke on the topic “The scientific work of I Sentitemsu Imsong,” and highlighted Imsong’s core research areas.
According to prof., Imsong’s PhD thesis caters to a field where one looks at properties of strong interactions of particles at high precision using methods of mathematical physics.
Imsong had published 23 papers in refereed journals, which was impressive according to his supervisor considering the fact that Imsong was hardly six to seven years into research in physics, he said.
His professor further informed that some of these papers have been cited over 25 times in different papers published across the discipline, with top citations of about 50.
Through close association over the years, Prof. Anant has observed that Imsong had progressed from reading elementary particle physics to becoming an accomplished scholar, developing an instinct for knowing whether the answer was correct or wrong, to point out that Imsong’s works showcased his inherent qualities.
The prof. challenged the audience stating that Imsong is a role-model for many who wishes to achieve what he achieved.
Further, he reminded that Dr. Imsong’s life and story should be told again and again because it is not often that we find a beacon of his calibre.
