- DIMAPUR — The
Naga People’s Front (NPF) has lauded Achumbemo Kikon, MLA and secretary general
of the NPF, for his "strong stance" on the One Nation, One Election
(ONOE) proposal, in which he "meticulously highlighted" its potential
consequences.
- In a press statement, the party said that his
well-articulated insights on ONOE emphasise the threat it poses to the identity
and autonomy of regional political parties, cautioning that its implementation
may cause more harm than good in the long run.
- “The party firmly stands by the need to safeguard regional
representation and uphold the democratic federal structure of the country,” it
said, adding that the NPF remains committed to advocating policies that protect
the rights and interests of the people of Nagaland, and it recognises the
leadership of Kikon in advancing these crucial discussions.
- Further, it lauded Kikon for renaming the existing Local
Area Development Programme (LADP) as the Vamuzo Local Area Development
Programme (VLADP).
- The party said that this proposal seeks to honour late
Vamuzo Phesao, former Chief Minister of Nagaland, whose visionary leadership
laid the foundation for grassroots development through the establishment of the
Village Development Board (VDB) and the Compact Area Development Programme
(CADP)—a model that has now evolved into LADP.
- It said that Phesao’s pioneering initiatives have had a
lasting impact on rural development in Nagaland, with their effectiveness being
recognised and emulated by several states and even at the national level
through the Member of Parliament Local Area Development Scheme (MPLADS).
- It said that Kikon’s proposition deserves the serious and
favourable consideration of the government.
