DIMAPUR, MAY 20
The Naga Mothers Association has vehemently denounced the alleged rape of a mentally challenged mother of 8 by one Kiedai Dwasang of Ngwalwa village who is a father of 4 himself on May 17 evening and totally aghast at the subsequent punishment meted out to the accused by the customary court excommunicating him from the village for mere 7 days.
NMA said it viewed the crime seriously and demands stringent action be taken by immediately arresting the accused and put him behind bars so that law enforcing agency may award him befitting punishment as per law. NMA implored upon the investigating agencies for impartial investigation upon the case and collect all evidences without concealing any part of their investigation so that the accused will be punished to the maximum.
“NMA is baffled to note that when it is made known that the accused is a serial rapist how can the Village Council or for that matter the Customary Law excommunicate him for a period of just 7 days after which he will be allowed to come back? What is the certainty that he will not repeat the same crime again?,” it asked.
At this rate the plight of women is at stake. Women are not safe when such deranged people are roaming free around our land, the NMA added.
“Therefore, NMA fervently appeals to the custodians of the Customary Law to take into account the heinous crime so committed and not to award such unacceptable judgement in future. Also victims of any form of violence be it abuse, rapes and murders are informed to contact their nearest law enforcing authority to lodge FIR and not just succumb to pressure from outside and settled for ‘unjust settlement’. It is also expected from the Court of Law to award fast and befitting punishment so as to encourage and win the trust and confidence of such victims as well as innocent people”, the statement of NMA said.
