Naga frontal organisations in Manipur’s Senapati district have announced restrictions on Kuki movement following an alleged confrontation at Gamgiphai Gate on August 4.
IMPHAL — Naga frontal organisations in Manipur’s Senapati district have announced restrictions on the movement of Kuki people within the district with immediate effect and until further notice.
The decision was taken at a joint meeting of the Naga People’s Organisation (NPO), tribal hohos, Senapati District Students Association (SDSA) and Senapati District Women’s Association (SDWA) held at the NPO conference hall in Senapati town.
According to a press release issued by the NPO on Saturday, the resolution followed an incident at Gamgiphai Gate on August 4.
The meeting took serious note of an incident in which representatives of the NPO, SDWA, SDSA and the supervisory committee were allegedly denied passage at Gamgiphai Gate by Kuki volunteers, despite repeatedly identifying themselves and explaining the purpose of their movement.
After deliberations, the organisations resolved that the Naga people of Senapati district would restrict the movement of Kuki people within the district as a collective form of protest against the incident.
The restriction will remain in force with immediate effect and until further notice, the NPO said.
The organisations also called upon the concerned authorities to take cognisance of the incident at Gamgiphai Gate and ensure that the rights, safety and dignity of the Naga people are respected to prevent similar incidents in the future.
