DIMAPUR — The Naga Council Dimapur (NCD) expressed deep sadness and grief at the demise of renowned singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg in Singapore following a scuba diving accident.
He had travelled to Singapore to attend the North-East Festival, where he was scheduled to perform.
In a condolence note, the NCD stated that Zubeen was honoured and revered by the Nagas, particularly by the Christians, for his self-composed Christian gospel songs with edifying lyrics.
It said North-East India as a whole, and Assam in particular, has lost one of its honoured sons of the soil, and the vacuum created by his demise is felt by people from all walks of life.

NCD said Zubeen Garg will be indelibly remembered for his contribution to the world of music by spreading the message of peace and harmony.
The council also expressed regret over unpalatable remarks made against late Garg by a Naga student, which have gone viral and hurt the sentiments of citizens, particularly in Assam. NCD appreciated the steps and precautionary measures taken by the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF) and its federating units, along with the Nagaland police.
Appealing to Naga social media users to exercise restraint and refrain from posting adverse comments that could aggravate the sensitive situation, NCD urged respect for the sentiments of the mourners.
It also informed that it is reaching out to various civil organisations in Assam and Nagaland to help restore normalcy at the earliest so that the learning atmosphere is preserved.
