IMPHAL — The working committee of United Naga Council (UNC), the apex body of Naga communities in Manipur, on Sunday announced the launch of an “inter-district economic blockade” along national highways passing through Naga areas in the state with immediate effect until the “safe rescue and release” of the remaining Naga hostages.
In a press release, the UNC stated that it had submitted an ultimatum to the government of Manipur on May 14, demanding the immediate and safe release of 20 Naga hostages allegedly held at Leilon Vaiphei village and Sapormeina Kuki village within 24 hours.

“On the morning of May 15, 2026, fourteen of the Naga hostages were released, leaving the fate of the remaining six, including two pastors, uncertain. The state government had requested more time, up to 2 pm on May 16, 2026, to trace and release the remaining hostages,” the statement said.
“The deadline was again deferred twice to facilitate the government for successful completion of the search operations and eventual safe release of the hostages,” it added.
However, the UNC alleged that despite the deferments, the six remaining Naga civilians continued to be held hostage.
It further claimed that the state machinery had failed to trace and rescue them even after the extended deadlines had expired.
