NABARD seeks to fast-track GI tag for 4 Naga agri products

  • KOHIMA — The National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development (NABARD) is pushing to expedite the process of obtaining Geographical Indication (GI) tag on four agricultural products of Nagaland.

  • The four products include Naga Job’s tears, Naga coloured maize, Naga foxtail millet, and Naga kholar.

  • Initiatives are being taken to ensure post-GI activity for the identified products, NABARD stated in its ‘State Focus Paper 2025-2026’ released on February 25.

  • The GI application in respect of these four products has been and is in the “pre-examination” status, as per the Geographical Indications Registry. All the products showed the same filing date: August 8, 2024.

  • Currently, four products from Nagaland have obtained GI tag: Naga mircha, Naga cucumber, Chakhesang shawls, and Naga tree tomato.

  • Registration validity for Naga Mircha (filed in 2003) and Naga tree tomato (filed in 2013) has been extended up to 2027 and 2032, respectively. GI registration validity for Chakhesang shawls, filed in 2017, is till 2025 (Dec. 31), while Naga cucumber is up to 2028.

  • The registry also indicated that three handicraft products of Nagaland applying for GI tag have been “abandoned.” The products are Naga Angami shawl, Naga Ao shawl and Naga Sumi shawl.
