Dimapur, Oct. 25 (EMN) : The artisan and agriculture showcase for women, Myki Festival, is underway at the old directorate at Bayavu in Kohima on October 25. The festival is organized by the department of Women Resource Development (WRD) to sell products from self-help groups from across Nagaland.
‘Naga women are the backbone of our economy,’ said commissioner-secretary for WRD & Civil Supplies, N Hushili Sema, during the inauguration of the festival. She said that Naga women should live with pride as they play an important role in sustaining the economy of the state besides taking care of the family. She encouraged women to work harder and to be more innovative in raising their standards of living.
The officer remarked that the event may be the first of its kind but similar programs would be organized, which she said would be more inclusive.
The director of WRD, Khrienuo Tachü, delivered the keynote address. The officer said that the festival, which is the first of its kind in Nagaland, is bringing many people specially women, together. During 2009-10 when the transformative livelihood intervention for self-help groups was starting to produce goods, she said, the department had decided to designate a name for all products and produce to make them more visible and allow easier market linkages.
Tachü explained that the department came up with the name ‘Myki,’ which simply mean woman or girl in Nagamese.
