Dimapur , March 7 (EMN): Citizens of Dimapur on Sunday held a symbolic protest against the violent military suppression being meted out to the peaceful protestors in Myanmar.

A candlelight vigil was held at the premises of The Garden at Supermarket in Dimapur on March 7.

On the occasion, Naga entrepreneur, Kevitho Kera gave a brief summary of the events that took place since the military coup happened in Myanmar stating that since then, media and internet have been restricted.

Kesa added that the recent “death of the 19-year-old protestor, who had ‘everything will be ok’ written on her t-shirt has affected everyone”.

President of Tenyimi Students’ Union Dimapur (TSUD) Rukewezo Wetsah shared that they were gathered to show their remorse towards the ‘operant crimes committed by the militants’.

Wetsah added that  not only in Myanmar, he opined that people all over the world would not tolerate as such injustices, ‘and not only today but even  in the coming days people would show solidarity to the Myanmar brothers and sisters’.

The TSUD president added that ‘while some might think the protest here is insignificant but any actions that condemns violence is never a small step.’ He urged the gathering to show solidarity even through social media by using the hashtags ‘PrayforMyanmar’ and ‘YouareNotAlone’.

During the candlelight vigil, president of Dimapur Naga Student’s Union (DNSU), Sedevilie Angami said that  this was not that first time people of Myanmar were protesting against this autocratic rule of the Myanmar military.

Angami added that they were also aware that Myanmar was fighting for democracy and it has a history of cultural violence but ‘today the situations has become a national concern.’

Angami also added that ‘using military weapons towards unarmed protesters resulting in loss of precious human life was  a grave violation of human rights and not less than genocide’.

“Every nation that stands against such tyrannical rule should come out and condemn the in human act of the Myanmar military. Democracy is not a destination but democracy is a journey”,  he said.
