- IMPHAL — Tremors
of the two major earthquakes that rocked Myanmar on Thursday were felt in
North-eastern states including Manipur, officials said.
- After the main tremor, more than 10 aftershocks with
magnitude upto 4.6 were triggered in Manipur.
- The two earthquakes struck in quick succession; the first
occurred at 11:50 am, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale, and the second at
12:02 pm, with a magnitude of 7.0 on the Richter scale, according to the Indian
Meteorological Department, Manipur Centre, under the Ministry of Earth
Sciences.
- “The two earthquakes were felt at 11.50 am and 12.03pm,
respectively and rocked the entire Indo-Myanmar region,” said Dr. Manichandra
Sanoujam of Seismological Observatory of Manipur University, in a press
release.

- “The epicentre of first earthquake with magnitude 7.7 was
located at 22.0223Degree N/95.9211degree E (Sagaing Region), Myanmar, 366km
southeast of Imphal and 19 km west of Mandalay Palace, Mandalay, Myanmar. The
second earthquake of magnitude 6.4 was located at 21.704degree N/95.9731degree
E and is about 35 km south of the first earthquake."
- Later in the day, two more earthquakes were reported: one in
Kamjong at 1:29 pm, measuring 4.3 on the Richter scale, and another in Chandel
at 6:47 pm, measuring 3.7 on the Richter scale.
- However, there was no report of any damage in Manipur, which
shares a more than 390 km long international border with Myanmar.
