Imphal, Sep. 24 (EMN): All the semester examinations of the Manipur University have been postponed until further order after the Sep. 21 midnight police raid at Manipur University (MU) hostels based on a complaint reportedly by the vice chancellor.
Controller of Examinations (in-charge) A Narayan Singh issued a notice, stating that “under the prevailing circumstances all the examinations of the university which have been scheduled earlier will be postponed until further order.”
The functioning of Manipur university which has around 5000 students, has been affected once again despite the appeal of vice chancellor in-charge Prof. K Yugindro to help in restoring normalcy, due to the resurfacing of the unrest in the campus after the Sep. 21 midnight police search at boy’s hostels and subsequent arrest and detention of seven students and six teachers.
The Manipur state Chief Minister N Biren on Monday said that the state government is committed to act as a mediator between the centre and university community to restore normalcy in university.
Even though the university was in the news since June following agitation, demanding removal Vice Chancellor Prof. Adya Prasad Pandey on charges of irregularities, the university resume to normal activities from Aug. 23 after signing an agreement with the government. However, he said the visit of Prof. K
Yugindro to campus on Sep. 20 reportedly based on HRD ministry order after Pandey handed over the charge of VC to Yugindro on Sep. 18, and subsequent search at boy’s hostels forced to create the new crisis.
University working women, girl students demonstrate
Demanding unconditional release of the arrested students and teachers and removal of the security forces, the Manipur University working women staged sit in demonstration inside the campus on Monday. However, police dispersed them.
The girls’ students of the university also staged similar demonstration in front of their hostels.
“Due to the frequent disturbances, we couldn’t continue our academic activities. Otherwise we could have completed our MA course four months back,” said a political science student.
Sharing a similar sentiment, a girl student claimed that students of the university students will not to appear in the ongoing examination unless the arrested students and teachers are released without any condition.
Senior most Prof. W Vishwanath of the university, leaders of the committee of political parties, a platform of the 10 opposition parties in Manipur, Ethno Heritage Council, a civil society organisation have demanded immediate release of arrested students and teachers besides revoking suspension order against teachers considering their academic careers, saying detention cannot bring any solution.
