Dimapur, July 25 (EMN): The National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP) Wokha held an awareness programme at Mt. Tiyi Government College on July 25, with Dr. Mhonthung Tungoe, Dental Surgeon of CHC Sanis as resource person.
Principal of the college, Dr. Apeni Lotha, in her welcome address gave a brief overview of the college stand for the control of tobacco in the college campus.
Dr. Tungoe in his speech stressed on the three most poisonous chemical in tobacco-nicotine, tar and carbon monoxide. He informed that every 6 seconds someone dies due to tobacco and kills almost 6 million every year globally. He expressed his concern wherein Nagaland stands 2nd in consumption of tobacco as per GATs survey 2009 – 2010. He sensitize the participants with the COTPA Act 2003 particularly on section 4, 5, 6 (a) (b) and 7.
Abeni R. Kikon, psychologist talked on how a person may be influenced or stay away from the use of tobacco in any form. She advised the students to stay away from tobacco use as they are still in a young age.
Vote of thanks was proposed by Sentimenla Jamir, HOD of Education department.
A total of 300 participants attended the awareness programme.
