Dimapur, Aug. 21 (EMN): Kohima Law College led by its professor in-charge, Kezhokhoto Savi, conducted a seminar on “Know your rights and entitlement” at the auditorium of Mount Olive College, Kohima, on August 21.
Addressing the teachers and students, resource persons spoke on “Public services delivery system” based on the Right to Public Services Act. They said that every citizen is entitled to hassle-free public services and redress his/her grievances.
They enlightened that public services are those provided by the government to the people living within its jurisdiction through the public sector and by financing provision of services. Delivery system ensures and guarantees a time-bound delivery of the various services, the resource persons maintained.
Some of the services under public service delivery system included healthcare, education, electricity, water-supply, issuing of ST certificate, birth certificate, voter’s card, ration cards, copies of land records etc.
Resource persons stated that public service delivery system aims at improving the quality and works as an interface between the people and the state. Public delivery service also aims at reducing corruption among the government officials and to increase transparency and public accountability. The Act makes government officials accountable and helped the government weed out corruption from the grassroots level to the top.
Stating that Nagaland is yet to have enact the Act, the speakers stated that the Nagaland Voluntary Consumers’ Organisation (NVCO) had launched the public services delivery campaign during the 2016 Vigilance Awareness Week with an appeal to the state government to introduce similar legislation for effective public services delivery to its citizens in the state and would also curb corruption in the state government functionaries.
Other topics on Consumer Rights, National Food Security Act 2013, Street vendor’s Act 2014, State Consumer helpline toll free No. 1800-345-3701, Environment, Food Safety & Standard Act 2006, and Human Rights and Lokayukta were also presented.
