Mt. Olive College embarks on innovative journey

Speaking on the occasion, Zhimomi highlighted various health issues confronting the youth and remarked that the innovative health kiosk would be a meeting or converging point for many health activities and awareness. While young people face huge issues today in the medical spheres like diabetes, tension, cancer and other diseases, Zhimomi pointed out that young adults were also dying from kidney disease, liver disease, pressure because of the lifestyles they lead. He appealed the college to establish the health kiosk into a success story with enthusiasm and replicate it into other areas across the State and other institutions in Kohima as health workers from different organisations come to impart them with health training. Also commenting the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in the State which is transmitted mainly through the sexual route, he stated that one should not pretend anymore like it doesn't exist. In this regard, he advised the youngsters to protect themselves from such killer disease by avoiding premarital sex and extramarital sex. Besides, he also urged them to seek spiritual root, find solace in God, seek change in Him and be able to pursue their careers. He also cautioned the students against emulating what they find on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or Snapchat. He encouraged them to eat right and be healthy and safe. He also advised the students to reduce salt, sugar and oil intake to avoid health complications later in life. He also pointed out that young men and women today are facing "depression and anxiety," which is in the frontline of the medical fraternity currently that could be clinically tackled like other issues. He challenged the medical fraternity to tackle the two issues, which are the carriers of big problems in the society. Dr. Puse Liegise, Nodal Officer of National Urban Health Mission (NUHM), in his keynote address, updated on the purpose and objective of NUHM under which the health kiosk was initiated in the college. Liegise said NUHM is committed to provide quality primary healthcare services which is accessible to the society. The programme of health kiosk and training of lecturers on peer education at the college was sponsored by NUHM programme division under "Innovation" activity in collaboration with NSACS, RKSK and Mount Olive College Kohima. The aims and objectives of NUHM is to facilitate "Peer education programme" at Mount Olive College by way of training lecturers/ professors as trainers, who would in turn select and train the peer educators. Peer educators would serve as a link with the teachers and others health services providers. Dr. Narendra Tiwary, the college’s principal, acknowledged the department for having faith and confidence in them and assured to give their best in taking up the noble challenge. Khekavi Yeptho, assistant pastor of Sumi Baptist Church Kohima, offered invocation prayer, while Lovitoli Zhimomi chaired the launching programme.
