MP Supongmeren urges Centre to implement Naga political agreements

DIMAPUR — Nagaland Member of Parliament (Lok Sabha) S Supongmeren Jamir on Thursday urged the government of India to immediately implement the Naga political agreements, contending that prolonged delays have fuelled uncertainty among the Naga people.

Raising the issue under Rule 377 in the Lok Sabha, Jamir called on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah to expedite the implementation of the 2015 Framework Agreement with the NSCN (IM) and the 2017 Agreed Position signed with the Working Committee of Naga National Political Groups (WC-NNPG).

According to a statement issued by the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC), Jamir recalled that 11 years have elapsed since the signing of the Framework Agreement on August 3, 2015, and nearly nine years since the Agreed Position of November 17, 2017, yet both agreements remain unimplemented.

He said that the prolonged delay has created uncertainty and frustration among the Naga people and argued that, since the government of India has repeatedly maintained that negotiations have concluded, the focus should now shift from negotiations to implementation.

Jamir urged the Centre to honour its commitments without further delay and cautioned that continued inaction could lead to growing public dissatisfaction and the emergence of more aggrieved groups, potentially affecting the peace process.

He also stressed that the implementation process must be transparent, ensuring that the Naga people are fully informed about the contents of the final settlement.

According to the statement, Jamir said that any political settlement should reflect the aspirations and interests of the Naga people and stressed that transparency would be essential in building public confidence in the implementation process.
