Lok Sabha MP Neiphiu Rio, who met with Union Communication Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad on April 27 in New Delhi, took up the overall status of BSNL services in Nagaland and northeastern region. In a statement, PS to the MP Yogesh Bansal said, the MP highlighted on the poor BSNL services in the state and other parts of the region and stressed on urgent need to improve and upgrade telecommunication and connectivity services. Rio also impressed upon the union minister and officials of the ministry to look into the problems of the region and take steps to improve broadband services, 3G services and mobile services.
On the issues raised by National Federation of Telecom Employees, BSNL, Nagaland on the need to immediately shift the BSNL headquarters to Kohima, the MP said Nagaland is the only state in India that does not have BSNL headquarters in state capital.
He also appealed to the ministry to increase the tenure of officers posted to Nagaland and the north east to three years instead of one and a half years. Further, the MP requested the minister to explore the avenues to employ the local youths into the department and if necessary to undertake skill development programmes for the youth so that telecom sector could absorb youth from Nagaland and NE region for gainful employment. Rio also submitted a letter to Prasad highlighting some of the urgent problems faced in Nagaland.
