DIMAPUR — Lok Sabha Member of Parliament S Supongmeren Jamir has urged the Government of India to consider the accreditation and upgrade of the Nagaland Institute of Medical Science and Research (NIMSR) or Kohima Medical College into a premier central institute on the lines of All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) or Regional Institute of Medical Sciences.
Highlighting the significance of Kohima Medical College as the first-ever medical college in Nagaland, the MP emphasised that the institution represents a historic milestone in strengthening healthcare infrastructure in the state, the NPCC stated in a press release.
The medical college commenced operations in September 2023 with an intake capacity of 100 students,
Jamir stated that despite this progress, there remains a pressing need for enhanced institutional capacity, advanced medical facilities, and increased academic and research opportunities.

Upgrading the college to the level of AIIMS or accrediting it as a central institute would not only improve healthcare delivery in Nagaland but also benefit the entire North Eastern Region, he stated.
The MP further pointed out that such an initiative would help address the shortage of specialised healthcare services, reduce dependency on other states for advanced treatment, and create opportunities for local youth in medical education and employment.
Jamir called upon the central government to take immediate and positive steps toward granting central institute status or AIIMS-level upgrade to Kohima Medical College, thereby ensuring equitable healthcare development and fulfilling the long-standing aspirations of the people of Nagaland.
