IMPHAL, January 31
The prestigious sixth 57 Mountain Division Polo Tournament was inaugurated with an impressive opening ceremony held at historic Mapal Kangjeibung, the oldest living Polo ground in the world here on Sunday. Thirteen Polo teams are vying for top honours in the event. The opening ceremony was keenly witnessed by a large number of Army personnel and civil population of Imphal, highlighting their interest in a heritage sport which originated in Manipur.
General Officer Commanding Major General SS Mishra of 57 Mountain Division and President, Manipur Equestrian Association Dr S Joy Kumar Singh attended the occasion as the Chief Guest and the President respectively. Speaking on the occasion Dr K Gopal Singh of Manipur Horse Riding & Polo Association complimented the Army and 57 Mountain Division for supporting and promoting the traditional sporting culture of Manipur. He also thanked the Army for its endeavours in bringing peace and prosperity to the State. He further complimented the Organising Committee of the Army for their effort in conducting this tournament. On the other hand Major General SS Mishra wished all the participating teams the very best for the exhilarating matches and mentioned that competition of this nature inculcates in us the spirit to win and perform to the limits of our potential. He also highlighted that encouraging young people to broaden the horizons of their ambition is vital and competitive sport should play a major role in making that happen.
Assuring people of the continued support from the Army for promotion of traditional sports, he declared the Sixth 57 Mountain Division Polo Tournament 2016 open.The ceremony also witnessed an impressing band display and entertaining Display of Khukri Dance and Lezim dance by the Army.
