the ‘Nature Camp’ in Khonoma village.
DIMAPUR — The
Department of Teacher Education, Mount Mary College, Chümoukedima, conducted a
‘Nature Camp’ for 72 student teachers (second semester of Social Science
Pedagogy) and two teacher educators, from January 31, 2024 to February 2.
The camp, organised by the Nagaland Pollution Control Board
under the Environmental Education Programme (EEP), took place at Gwizan
Resource Centre, Khonoma village, Kohima district, an update stated.
The student teachers engaged in an enriching and
experiential learning opportunity and also visited the sheep farm at Poilwa.
Under the guidance of Khriebu Meyase, a licensed nature
guide, the participants took part in a nature walk aimed at educating them on
the preservation of forests.
“The focus was on fostering a deeper understanding of
environmental conservation, biodiversity, and sustainable practices of Khonoma
village in relation to forests.
“Throughout the walk, the student teachers were encouraged
to observe and engage with their surroundings, learning firsthand about the
importance of preserving natural ecosystems,” the update informed.
Meyase provided insights into various aspects of forest
ecology, including indigenous plant species, wildlife, and the overall balance
of nature that must be maintained to protect these vital habitats.
Additionally, the camp emphasised how future educators could
incorporate environmental education into their teaching practices. The
three-day camp was a significant and informative experience for the student
teachers, giving them the opportunity to immerse themselves in environmental
issues while learning practical skills for integrating these concepts into
their pedagogical approaches.
“This initiative not only supported the student teachers in
enhancing their professional competencies but also reinforced the importance of
environmental stewardship, aligning with the mission of the Pollution Control
Board's Environmental Education Programme,” it stated.
