Kohima, Feb. 5 (EMN): Commemorating the 32nd national road safety month, Kohima district administration organised a ‘Women two-wheeler rally’ in Kohima on February 5. The national road safety month is observed annually from January 18 to February 17.
A brief flag-off ceremony was launched by the additional deputy commissioner (ADC) of Kohima, Lithrongla Tongpi Rutsa, at PR Hill traffic point, Kohima, on Friday morning. In his opening remark, the Regional Transport Officer (RTO), Kohima, SY Sanglee Chang, sought the vital roles of women towards the development and progress of the society as they comprised of about 50% of the total population.
He said that about 1.50 lakh lives are lost due to road accidents while many suffer debilitating injuries every year in India.
He, therefore, stressed on the need to sensitise all stakeholders on road safety measures. He stated that the central and state governments observe road safety week every year by taking up various activities in order to avoid any possible road accidents. Towards this end, he further stated that the central government has come up with the theme ‘Sadak Surakhsha- Jevan Raksha’ for the national road safety month.
The officer added that the ‘Women two-wheeler rally was a part of this year’s ‘Road safety month programme.’ He appealed to all two-wheeler riders to wear helmet and other safety gears at all times.
A speech was also delivered by Nagaland Two-Wheeler Taxi Association President Chumben B Yanthan, wherein he appealed to all riders to comply with all traffic rules for the safety of everyone.
The two-wheeler rally was flagged off from PR traffic point and culminated at Razhü point, Kohima.
Riders caught without helmet
Kohima traffic personnel on Friday detained several motorcyclists without wearing helmets in the state capital.
The defaulters were fined as per the Motor Vehicles Act and released with a caution to wear helmets while driving.
According to a traffic official, the new Motor Vehicles Act has been implemented since 2019.
As per the act, traffic personnel can impose a fine of INR 2,000 for violation of the rules besides seizure of driving licence for six months.
