- IMPHAL — More than 300 good trucks besides
passenger buses and oil tankers are stranded in Manipur’s Senapati district due
to the ongoing indefinite shutdown called by the Kuki-Zo Council (KZC).
- Altogether, there are 304 loaded trucks, 13 loaded oil
tankers, four buses, three mini buses (Wingers) and four pickup trucks (DI)
stranded between Hengbung and Tumuyon Khullen along the Imphal–Mao sector of
National Highway 2 till 5pm on Tuesday, according Senapati district police.
- Barring a few, most of the vehicles have been stranded since
March 8 when violence erupted, police sources said.
- Meanwhile, highlighting their plight, the stranded drivers
said that with so many vehicles stranded, they are facing difficulties in
accessing bathroom facilities. They also appealed to the concerned authorities
to allow them to ferry their trucks at the earliest as some of them are loaded
with essential commodities like onion, pulses, rice, potatoes, etc.
- On Sunday, the Senapati District Truck Owners' Association,
Senapati District Truck Drivers' Union and Manipur Drivers' Association,
together with Senapati police, distributed water to the stranded drivers and
their assistants.
- The indefinite shutdown by KZC came into force from the
midnight of March 8 in protest against the alleged crackdowns by security
forces on demonstrators protesting “free movement” in the state.
- The KZC has been demanding revocation of the “free movement”
directive initiative and judicial inquiry into the March 8 incident in
Kangpokpi district in which one person was killed and 43 others, including 27
security personnel, were injured.
