SJHS: Saint John’s High School, Diphupar ‘B’ observed World No Tobacco Day at the school premises on theme “Tobacco a threat to development,” on May 31, with Dr. C Tetseo as the special guest.
Dr. C Tetseo in his short speech urged the students to stay away from all tobacco products as it leads to diseases affecting heart and lungs and many types of cancer. He also mentioned that students should take an important role in beating tobacco for health, prosperity and national development.
A demonstration on “How consuming tobacco affects the human body” was given by Akumienla and Imnasenla of Class 8.
Earliers, students’ notes on their bad habits in a piece of paper were later disposed off by class leaders during the function.
Farewell song “Have thine own way Lord” was presented by Class-8 girls. The discarding of bad habits of the students and oath taking ceremony was initiated by headmaster, Johny Abraham. Short speeches were delivered by the students of class -10 and farewell prayer by Pastor Wojanthung Ngullie of Lotha Baptist Church Diphupar-B.
After the program, the students of classes 6 to 10 in collaboration with the headmaster and teachers also marched in procession starting from school gate to 5th Mile junction, carrying a display coffin made out of empty cigarette packets and tobacco wrappers with an effigy of a tobacco lover, the students also shouted and carried anti-tobacco slogans, like-Not beef, ban tobacco; We don’t want tobacco; No room for tobacco in our life; tobacco kills memory power; Raise the wall against tobacco; We want tobacco free village.
The main objective of displaying the coffin with dummy was to warn people about the consequences of using tobacco and how it will eventually lead to loss of precious lives.
Teachers, Sorotsa and Rhonthungo Kikon also highlighted on the hazards and effects of consuming tobacco to the public at 5th Mile junction and Local Ground Diphupar- B where they were joined by the students of class –8 of Government Middle School Diphupar-B.
Speaking at the conclusion, the headmaster said that students should abstain from all bad habits and reminded the students to help prevent their friends, parents, relatives and neighbours from consuming tobacco products. He also added that everyone must intend in making Diphupar – B a Tobacco Free Village.
Later the headmaster, teachers, students of both the school and parents witnessed the burning of the dummy along with the coffin at the local ground.
LFHSS: Along with the rest of the world, Livingstone Foundation Higher Secondary School observed the World No Tobacco Day 2017 on May 31 at its campus on theme “Tobacco – a threat to development”.
Presenting key note address, the Head of Academics, Prabhat Mandal called upon all the students and teachers to abstain themselves from all sorts of tobacco substances including smokeless and smoke tobacco so that their lives do not turn into ashes like the ashes of a cigarette.
To mark the occasion, the school conducted essay writing, painting and slogan-writing competitions for Grades IV to XII,
Other highlights of the Programme included presentation of significance of the day and speech on ill-effects of tobacco.
Proposing the vote of thanks, coordinator of the School, Zakir Hussain thanked the teachers and students who were involved in making the programme a great success. He also thanked the District Nodal Officer of Dimapur’s National Tobacco Control Programme (NTCP), Dr. C. Tetseo (in absentia) for encouraging educational institutions to participate in Tobacco eradication programmes and also for pioneering the Tobacco Control programme in Dimapur.
RJHSS: In commemoration of World No Tobacco Day, Ram Janaki Higher Secondary School, Dimapur (RJHSS), organised an essay writing competition on topic “Tobacco a threat to development”.
Speech on ill effects of tobacco was delivered by P.C. Modi, PGT. Students also put up placards “Say no to tobacco”.
Vice-principal, P.K. Sah encouraged the students.
