Dimapur, April 23 (EMN): Earth Friendly Generation: Earth Friendly Generation (EFG) observed World Earth Day cum 1st Inter-School Debate competition on topic “Should plastic shopping bags be completely banned,” at Indoor Stadium Chiephobozou Town, Kohima on April 22.

The programme was supported by Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LED for All (UJALA) under the initiative of Deputy Commissioner, Kohima. Chief Operating Officer, Nagaland State Rural Livelihoods Mission (NSRLM), Menuoneituo Chadi, was the critics’ for the event, highlighted the history on how the earth day came into being.
He congratulated the EFG for taking initiatives in reaching out to schools and communities, generating awareness like the rest of the country in the world.
He said the theme of the event “Should plastic shopping bags be completely banned” has validated the Earth Day theme “Environmental and climate literacy”. He also added that such kind of platform should be conducted more often for students to come together and also encouraged the teachers present to take up such activities in days to come.
Chadi stated that co-curricular activities like this makes the students to do research and explore themselves to unknown where they find solution besides the bookish knowledge taught in the class room environment and helps in overall education development.

Things are changing in the society and thus we are bond to change to the worst unless we as responsible citizens do it on our part at our own level to save the environment to save the Earth, he added.
Judges for the debate were Kelhoumedo Andrew and Kevidenu Sylvia Kulnu.
Director of Earth Friendly Generation, Keduolhoukho Chadi, in his address, said every year on April 22 has become one of the most important date for EFG. On this day, he said EFG observed Earth Day which marked as a respect for the Mother Earth.
Pointing out that rapid development with modern technologies has changed the values of human activities towards the environment, he said peoples’ demand from natural resources has increase day by day. At present generation, use of natural resources has become beyond our “needs” and which becomes our “wants”, he stated.
He also stressed on the climate change which has become a treat to global warming. Further, he believed that from the event, everyone will regain the need of protecting the earth before it becomes too late for us to live in a good environment.
Mokthoi Shiu of Baptist School, Botsa was adjudged in the 1st position and Daveilu of Silas Memorial School, Thizama in 2nd position. The winners were awarded with a cash prize and citation by event critics. Participants were also received the participation certificate.
Leo Club Dimapur: As a part of the project “Save the planet,” Leo Club Dimapur on April 23 planted trees and install bamboo dustbins in and around Dimapur under the chairmanship of Leo Ankit paharia.
Assam Rifles commemorated World Earth Day on April 22, by conducting afforestation drive and various awareness programmes at various places in Kohima, Phek, Wokha, Tuensang, Kiphire and Dimapur district. A total of 1200 saplings were planted to spread the message “Save the earth”.
In Peren, lectures were conducted for school children and locals while documentaries were shown at Kiphire, Peren and poster making and essay writing competitions were conducted at Peren and Chumukedima
