Mon district wins Dr. T Ao Trophy 2025, defeating Niuland 6-5 in a thrilling penalty shootout at Kohima

KOHIMA — Mon emerged champions of Dr. T Ao Trophy 2025 after defeating Niuland 5-4 in a tense penalty shootout during the final match played on Friday at Indira Gandhi Stadium, Kohima.
The victory earned Mon a total prize money of INR 5 lakh, with an additional INR 2 lakh announced by Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio.
The nail-biting contest ended 1-1 even after 105 minutes, forcing the match into penalties. Mon converted five out of six spot-kicks, while Niuland managed four, missing two crucial shots.
The first goal of the match came from Niuland’s Kakhevi in the 14th minute, before Mon’s Arap equalised just before half-time in the 45th minute.

Both teams fought hard in the second half and extra time but failed to find the winner before the tiebreaker.
Niuland, the runners-up, received INR 3 lakh, including INR 1 lakh announced by the chief minister. This marks Mon’s first-ever Dr. T Ao Trophy triumph.

An estimated crowd of 28,000 fans filled the stadium, setting one of the highest attendance records in Nagaland sports history.
Addressing the closing ceremony, Rio said that the legacy of Dr. T Ao continues to inspire young people to strive for greater heights. He praised the players for their skills, determination, and team spirit, noting that fair play matters more than winning or losing.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to promoting sports, improving infrastructure, and creating opportunities that balance athletics with education.
