Addressing the event before the competition began, Y Kikheto Sema, Principal Secretary for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources and Parliamentary Affairs Department, said that it is the desire of the state government to create platforms for students that moves beyond traditional academics and dives into the heart of how the nation function through the Legislative Assembly and the Parliament.
He stated that knowledge of the Constitution, legislative process, rights and duties is not meant for political science students alone but an essential for every citizen.
“A quiz on these topics sharpens young minds on the nuances of governance, lawmaking, and parliamentary debate,” he said.
Sema also stated that democracy is not a spectator sport but it thrives on participation, and when the students learn about the Assembly, the Lok Sabha, the Rajya Sabha, the Question Hour, or the process of passing a bill, they are learning about the very mechanisms that ensure the voice of the people is heard.
He encouraged all participants to look at the quiz not just as a search for the right answers, but as a way to understand the 'why' behind the laws.
He reminded that debating is not about shouting but it is about presenting ideas logically, listening to others, and reaching a consensus.
He further noted that democracy is a fundamental right and also a collective responsibility, requiring active participation rather than passive existence. He affirmed that said the competition is a rehearsal for future roles as responsible leaders.
Evothung Ezung, coordinator of Kohima College, Kohima, encouraged the students by saying that the quiz competition is not merely a test of knowledge but a platform to celebrate curiosity, critical thinking and joy of learning.
It also teaches value of teamwork and discipline, he said.
Ezung added that events like this help students expand their horizons beyond the textbook and develop a deeper understanding of the world.
