Mokokchung, June 15 (EMN): Citizens of Mokokchung town on Friday adopted three resolutions to ‘fight crime against women and social evil’ during a public meeting that was conducted in the town's square. The meeting was held as a consequence of the alleged rape of a minor in the town recently.
The public meeting was organised by the Mokokchung Town Aor Telongjem (MTAT), All Ward Union Mokokchung (AWUM), Mokokchung Town Lanur Telongjem (MTLT), Ao Senden, Watsu Mungdang and Ao Students’ Conference (AKM).
The resolution was presented before the attending public members by a committee formed by the six frontal organisations of the community. A copy of the resolution which was made available to the press stated that a strong committee would be formed to fight crime against women and 'social evils.' The committee will exercise powers and functions under the ambit of all the apex bodies in Mokokchung town.
The resolution stated a resolve ‘not to protect or save the culprit’ in the event of rape incidents. It stated that whoever tries to bail out accused persons during 'sentence' would be doing so at own risk and would not be granted the right to participate in any Ao 'customary practices.'
It resolved further that to fight against 'social evils' a ‘vigilance team’ consisting of men and women would be set up in all the 18 wards of the town. This team would be set by ward authorities and shall function under stated authorities.
