Mokokchung, April 5 (EMN): As part of the sanitation campaign Swachh Bharat Mission the scheme’s brand ambassador Supongmeren Jamir handed over six pick-up trucks for six wards in the Mokokchung municipality on April 4.
The beneficiaries of the trucks are Artang, Alempang, Kichutip, Kumlong, Majakong and Mongsenbai wards.
The additional deputy commissioner of Mokokchung Bendanglila said that the trucks were being given away following a memorandum of understanding between the Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) and the wards.
The memorandum states that the wards’ respective sanitation committee shall be fully responsible for the maintenance of the vehicle under the guidance of the ward’s authority. The drivers, helpers and the labours will be employed by the respective ward according to their own terms and conditions with intimation to the MMC.
The ward authority has been authorized to collect sanitation charges from households within their areas to manage sanitation work. Renewal of vehicles and ultimate condemnation or replacement of vehicles will be initiated through the MMC.
The administrator informed that on April 7 a ‘sanitizing programme’ will be conducted for sanitation committees from 18 wards at the JAV. A joint cleanliness drive will conducted on May 2.
Exhorting the people at the MMC Shopping Complex during a formal programme marking the event, Nagaland State Brand Ambassador Supongmeren Jamir urged the beneficiaries to use the trucks ‘solely for the purpose of waste.’ He suggested to the wards to devise relevant ways to manage waste. He suggested recycling ‘into monetary production’ which he said will be a surplus for the district’s economy. He has suggested to the MMC to ‘license’ young entrepreneurs to initiate such work.
Deputy Commissioner of Mokokchung Sushil Kumar Patel spoke during the occasion while the chairman of Kichutip ward spoke on behalf of the beneficiaries. A PowerPoint presentation on the topic “clean and healthy Mokokchung” was also presented by Mokokchung District Ambassador Limalenden Longkumer.
Waste bins were also distributed to various wards, churches and civil organisations’ offices.
