MOKOKCHUNG — Heavy downpours on September 14 triggered multiple landslides across Mokokchung town, resulting in significant disruption and property damage.
In Aongza Ward, a house collapsed following a landslide, while a retaining wall of another residence partially gave way. Additionally, a house in Mongsenbai Ward was partially submerged by landslide debris, as reported by the district administration, though no casualties were reported.
The most severe incident occurred in Aongza Ward, where a house was partially destroyed around 8 pm on Sunday after intense rainfall triggered a landslip.
The disaster displaced the resident family, burying their belongings under debris.
Ayutemjen Chungtia, 51 years, the homeowner, recounted the harrowing experience, noting that water began gushing from the kitchen floor right after the incessant rain subsided.

“While we were trying to remove the water with jugs and buckets, the ground beneath the house started shifting with sounds, forcing us to flee immediately,” he said.
The landslide swept away four rooms — three bedrooms and a kitchen-destroying property worth approximately INR 10 lakh. Large cracks have also appeared in the remaining structure, signalling potential future threats.
Currently displaced, Ayutemjen and his family-comprising his wife, four children, and elderly mother-are taking refuge at a neighbour’s home.
His son, Supongnechet, managed to recover some documents earlier today but lost critical items, including his PAN card, Aadhaar card, and ATM card, which were in his wallet.
Despite the loss, Ayutemjen expressed gratitude to those who rallied to their aid, including the district administration, Indian Red Cross Society, Mokokchung Municipal Council (MMC) councillor Imtiyapang and others.
Imtiyapang assured that the District Administration and MMC are committed to supporting the victims, exploring all possible means to provide assistance.
