KOHIMA — Model Higher Secondary School (MHSS), Kohima, emerged winner of the 3rd edition of Sonic Showdown, the ultimate band battle and beat contest for high school and higher secondary school students, held at RCEMPA in Jotsoma on Tuesday.
The event was organised by the Department of Youth Resources and Sports, Nagaland.
Eden Higher Secondary School, Mokokchung, secured the first runners-up position, while Christian Higher Secondary School (CHSS), Dimapur won the second runners-up title.
In the individual categories, Eden Higher Secondary School, Mokokchung, won Best Vocalist and Best Bassist while MHSS Kohima bagged Best Keyboardist and Best Guitarist. Don Bosco Higher Secondary School, Kohima, won the Best Drummer award.
Alun Hangsing, chairman of the Nagaland State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NSCPCR), attended the event as the special guest.
Addressing the gathering, Hangsing spoke about the changing perception and growing influence of music, noting that western rock music was once viewed with apprehension by many parents, particularly during the younger years of his generation.
He said music has today transcended barriers and emerged as a universal language connecting people across generations, communities and regions. He also highlighted its potential to positively influence emotions, attitudes, studies and outlook when used responsibly.
“Music is a special gift from God to mankind,” he said, while quoting William Shakespeare's line, “If music be the food of love, play on.”
Hangsing encouraged the participating students to make full use of the opportunities and resources available to them and urged them to create and promote original music.
He also acknowledged the efforts of the Task Force for Music and Arts (TaFMA) in promoting Nagaland's music and helping local musicians reach wider platforms, with support from the Department of Youth Resources and Sports and the State government.
Earlier in the day, various competitions were held as part of the State Level Youth Festival.
In the declamation competition, Ralu Vero from Phek secured first position, followed by Yimjungbenla from Kohima in second and Tsüno Venuh from Meluri secured the third position.
Akhu Richa won the painting competition, with Neiketounuo Khana and Imkonglemla In Longchar secured second and third positions respectively.
In the poetry competition, Kilini P. Zhimo stood first, followed by Pipivi Sheqi and Vineinüo Khana in second and third positions respectively.
Niuland won the folk song competition, while Tuensang and Phek secured second and third positions respectively.
