Imphal, Dec 11 (EMN): Manipur government on Tuesday felicitated six times world champion pugilist M C Mary Kom by giving the title Meethoi Leima (Victorious lady) to honour her “superlative achievement” in boxing in international arena.
Mother of three, Mary Kom became the most successful boxer in the history of women’s world championships by winning her sixth gold medal with an unanimous result over Ukraine’s Hanna Okhota in New Delhi last month. Thus she also matched Cuban men’s legend Felix Savon as the joint most successful pugilist (men and women) in the World Championships history. She now has an incredible six gold and one silver medal.
Recognising the achievement, Chief Minister N Biren Singh handed over a cheque of INR 10 lakh to her besides announcing to name a road ‘Imphal West DC road’ connecting the main city and National Games village at Langol where the world champion resides with his family after her name.
The chief minister crowned the medallist boxer with ‘Kajenglei’ a traditional head gear, traditional wrap-around (phanek mapan naibi), belt (khwangchet) and chadar (apaba inna-phi).
“People will continue to shower their love and care for Mary Kom in her effort for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics,” Singh said.
In her speech, Mary Kom said she would not achieve much in her carrier without people’s support adding that she didn’t know how she would repay.
She advised the players to practice regularly, dream for big achievements in your respective fields, keep discipline, have determination and give best effort.
