KOHIMA, MARCH 21
MLA Vikho-o Yhoshü today underscored the intrinsic worth of sports such as building leadership qualities, team spirit, healthy respect for the rule of law and fair play, and emphasized the need for young students to imbibe these qualities early in life.
Speaking at the inaugural function of the Annual Sports Week 2016 of The Vineyard School, Kohima as the chief guest, the legislator said education is for all round development of individuals and games & sports activities are essential for the development of personality. He exhorted the students that the importance of sports cannot be overemphasized as they help in keeping a person physically fit and energetic, help people learn to cope with difficult situations and be in healthy competitive spirit.
Besides being good recreations, sports activities also contribute in developing alertness as well as concentration to learn, and sportspersons have been found to become broad minded, principled, disciplined, tolerant with better attitude and world views of life.
He maintained that there cannot be better training than games & sports for young students preparing to enter the fray of life. Yhoshü called upon the students to understand that sports is not just about winning or losing, but the quality and the spirit in which it is played. “We play games to win, to do well within a set of rules if these rules are not followed we get disqualified, the same goes in life. Take care of yourselves as you would do in sports, live fairly and justly to ultimately succeed in life,” he told the students.
Earlier, the chief guest unfurled the school’s flag of the event and took salute from five parade contingents of students from four different houses and the Scouts & Guides of the school.
Competition in various disciplines of sports including football, volley-ball, marathon race and some indoor games were played today. The second day will be marked by competition in athletics in different categories.
