MLA Dr. Sukhato flags off transportation vehicle in Pughoboto

  • DIMAPUR — With an aim to boost organic farming and improve logistical support for local farmers, Dr. Sukhato A Sema, MLA of 13 Pughoboto Assembly Constituency, flagged off a transportation vehicle for Pughoboto Organic Farmer Producer Company Limited (FPC) during a programme held at VDB Hall in Pughoboto town on Thursday.

  • The flag-off programme was held as part of the annual general meeting of the farmer producer company under the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for the North Eastern Region (MOVCD-NER), an update from Dr. Sukhato stated.

  • Speaking at the launch programme, Dr. Sema extended gratitude to the chief minister and the advisor of Agriculture for their visionary leadership and commitment to agricultural development, which led to Pughoboto’s inclusion under MOVCD-NER Phase-IV. He emphasised the need for farmers to transition to large-scale organic farming saying that logistical challenges would no longer be a hindrance to their growth and market expansion.

  • "The government is committed to empowering our farmers, ensuring that they have all the necessary resources and support to expand their production and reach new markets. With this transportation vehicle, our organic produce will now have better access to consumers, both within and beyond Nagaland," said Dr. Sema.

  • He also highlighted various government schemes and initiatives designed to benefit farmers and encouraged them to actively participate in subsidy programmes, financial assistance schemes and training sessions that would enhance their agricultural productivity.

  • A key focus of his speech was on carbon credit programme, a global initiative that incentivises eco-friendly and sustainable farming practices. He elaborated on the pros and cons of the programme and urged the farmers to explore the potential of earning carbon credits by adopting climate-friendly agricultural methods.

  • "We must embrace sustainability in farming, not just for economic benefits but also for the preservation of our environment. The carbon credit programme can open new financial avenues for our farmers while promoting responsible farming practices," he added.

  • He mentioned that the Pughoboto Organic Farmer Producer Company Ltd. currently supports 500 registered farmers and the introduction of the transportation vehicle was expected to enhance market access, reduce post-harvest losses and improve supply chain efficiency. He added that the initiative was a crucial step toward self-reliance and sustainability in the agricultural sector.

  • The event concluded with a renewed commitment from all stakeholders to continue strengthening organic farming, ensuring better financial security for farmers and creating a sustainable agricultural ecosystem in Pughoboto.

  • The event was attended by ADC of Pughoboto, Tiameren Chang; SDAO of Pughoboto, Kitoho Michael Swu; representatives from COLKS and FPC representatives.
