DIMAPUR, JANUARY 30
Amidst simmering anger against the perceived rampant corruption in the state, a politician has called out to the youths of the state of Nagaland to stand up and fight corruption.
The youth community of the state must take the initiative of ‘correcting the wrongdoings practically by raising their voices against corruption instead of criticizing and blaming the leaders,’ member of legislative assembly Mmhunlumo Kikon said during a college event in Dimapur.
‘Scholastic Day’, an annual event of local college in Dimapur, Tetso College, was observed on Saturday in the college’s campus. Said event is observed every year during which students, teachers, and staffers are recognized for their achievements throughout the year.
The chief guest for the event was Parliamentary Secretary for Labor and Employment and Skill Development Mnhonlumo Kikon.
In his speech, Mnhonlumo Kikon called for a fight against corruption led by the youths. ‘To make Nagaland a corruption free state, the youths should take the initiative of correcting the wrongdoings practically by raising their voices against corruption instead of criticizing and blaming the leaders in social media,’ he said.
He said changes come from the very beginning starting from who you vote and why you vote. He said ‘frustration’ in the social media by students for all problems will be of no help towards the uplift of the society.
The chief guest also spoke about the important role a student can play in bringing positive changes in the society by ‘questioning’ what needs to be questioned and by correcting what needs to be corrected.
He also highlighted various problems and issues faced by the youths in the society that he said needed attention. He implied that the magnitude of the unemployment problem in Nagaland was being compounded by youths ‘aiming’ only for government and central jobs.
Citing dignity of labor as an important aspect for living a satisfied working life, Mnhonlumo Kikon said one should inculcate the habit of dignity of labor while contributing to the future of the society. ‘By not working we are working against the future of the state,’ the politician said.
The parliamentary secretary also said that with the coming of computer age and modernization, ‘skill development’ is one of the most important aspect that can take the youths forward without depending only on high standard jobs.
He said the one of the main problem behind Nagaland’s poor economy was that money was not being circulated within the state. Money is earned and paid off to outsiders who come to the state for employment opportunities, the legislator said.
To all the students he advised ‘work hard and compete for the best’, citing that ‘unless you know who you are, where you are, you will never succeed’. He also called upon all students to respect any kind of jobs and that if ‘work culture’ is carried forward, the state’s economy will also rise.
During the event, various awards and certificates were given away to students and staffers for excellence in studies and management works. The honors were hosted by the director of the college’s student service, Dr. Hewasa Lorin.
The event also covered various cultural shows marking a celebration for the Tetso College family.
