DIMAPUR, AUGUST 26
Women Cell Dimapur, on Monday last arrested two persons from Sibsagar in Assam and “rescued (the) missing woman” – who was later returned to her home and her husband in Dimapur – in a case that continues to be shrouded in mystery.
According to a police document made available to the press, on August 21 last, an FIR was filed by one Kamrul Islam in which he had informed the police that his wife Nazma Begum was missing after she went out in the evening to an ATM kiosk.
Subsequent police investigation, aided by technological assistance from telecom companies, traced the wife’s cell phone to a location in Sibsagar, Assam. Women Cell personnel along, with the help of the local police in Sibsagar, rounded up the place and arrested two persons identified as Abdul Salam Laskar (22) and Anamuddin Laskar (24).
The police document stated that the two arrested persons had admitted to their crime while revealing that “they have induced the woman and withdraw (sic) cash amount of Rs 1,68,000 and took her to Sibsagar and even threatened her.”
Interestingly, sources privy to the investigation said they were not looking at kidnapping angle. The possibility of the wife conniving with the two accused persons has not been ruled out.
Either ways, the case should be clear by now. If the wife is not involved, then it becomes an obvious case of kidnapping. Otherwise, she should have been arrested along with the other accused persons, for running with Rs 1,68,000 in cash.
The police statement, however, added that investigation was on after they were granted 48 hours remand of the accused persons. A case against the same has also been registered with West Police Station, Dimapur.
