DIMAPUR — In another disturbing incident, an 11-year-old girl was allegedly subjected to repeated physical and mental abuse by her foster mother at Rukizu Colony in Pfutsero town, Phek district.

Sources informed Eastern Mirror that the foster mother had repeatedly inflicted injuries on the minor girl using the blunt side of a machete (dao) without any apparent reason. This was reportedly the fourth instance of such abuse.

The incident came to light on Saturday when the foster father—a Nagaland Armed Police (NAP) personnel posted in a different district—took the girl to a pharmacy for treatment of a minor ailment. The pharmacist noticed bruises and marks on the girl, indicating abuse.

Names of the foster parents have been withheld in accordance with provisions under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, which prohibits disclosure of any information that may lead to identification of a minor victim.

The minor is said to be the daughter of the foster father’s brother and had been living with the couple for over six years. The accused is reported to be the foster father’s second wife.

According to reports, the girl is now in the custody of her grandparents.
