Imphal, April 6 (EMN): Manipur’s Forest and environment minister Thounaojam Shyamkumar Singh and Tribal and hills areas development minister N Kayisii led a high level official delegation on Thursday visited the landslide hit Sirarakhong village in Manipur’s Ukhrul district to take stock of the situation there.
On Wednesday around 2 pm, a massive landslide in the village following incessant rains since the past one week washed away around 7 houses in the village which is known for its ‘Sirarakhong’ chilies across the region. However, there is no report of any human casualty.
Top officials of the state forest department headed by Principal Chief Conservator of Forest PN Prasad and other senior officials of Directorate of Environment also accompanied the minister during the day’s visit. Later the visiting team also holds a meeting with the natural disaster affected villagers in the village wherein the visiting ministers assured that necessary assistance will be provided to the affected villagers. They also extended immediate help to the needy ones.
In another development Deputy Chief Minister Yumnam Joykumar Singh distributed relief materials to the hailstorm affected families of Meitei Langol Yumjao Manbi area in Manipur’s Imphal West district on Thursday. After paying visit to the affected families, Joykumar distributed essential commodities including Rice, Dal, Mustard Oil and Candles to 121 members of 29 Households in the area which was badly affected due to recent spate of rain accompanied by hailstorm April 2 midnight.
As a result, many families have been taking shelter at relief camps in the area. Speaking to media on the sideline of the relief materials, he said, Short term and Long term measures have been formulated and in due course of time it will be implemented in view of frequent flash flood in and around Imphal city. Low lying areas in the city and low embankments of Nambul and Waisel Maril have been identified and reinforcement work is on, he added.
