Security forces arrested a militant belonging to a proscribed outfit and two others for their alleged involvement in extortion activities in Manipur's Imphal East and Thoubal districts
IMPHAL — Security forces arrested a militant belonging to a proscribed outfit and two others for their alleged involvement in extortion activities in Manipur's Imphal East and Thoubal districts, police said on Saturday.
A 27-year-old cadre of the banned National Revolutionary Front Manipur was apprehended from his native place Koirengei in Imphal East district on Friday, a police statement said.
Around Rs 30,500 in cash, suspected to be extorted money, was seized from his possession, it said.
Based on the militant's inputs, one of his associates, who undertook various activities for the banned outfit, was apprehended from the Keikol Mayai Leikai area in the district, the police said.
An extortionist associated with the proscribed Kangleipak Communist Party (Nongdrenkhomba) was arrested from Kodompokpi Mamang Leikai in Thoubal district, the statement added.
Security forces have been conducting search operations and area domination exercises in the fringe and vulnerable localities across all districts of Manipur since ethnic violence broke out three years ago.
The ethnic conflict that erupted in May 2023 between the valley-based Meitei and the hill-based Kuki communities has claimed at least 306 lives, with 49 individuals remaining missing and thousands left homeless."
