Nagaland’s march to full elementary education is headed for further degeneration if the recent statistics released by the Ministry of Human resources are anything to consider. The Union Minister of Human Resource Development, Zubin Irani, has released the ‘flash statistics’ for 2014 for Elementary Education in India.
The statistics are prepared annually by the National University of Educational Planning & Administration. The report was presented to the minister in New Delhi on Friday, June 20. The Statistics cover 1.45 million schools spread over 662 Districts across all States and UTs. The District Information System for Education (DISE) is a district based data base and gives information for school, block, district, State & national disaggregates.
The report was made available to this daily on Friday, June 20. The Flash Statistics also contain an Educational Development Index based on four constituents of Access, Infrastructure, Teachers and Outcomes. The state ranking based on the EDI reveals that Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Sikkim, Himachal Pradesh & Karnataka are ranked in the first five.
According to the report, an alarming 65.26% of primary schools have less than 200 working days. These schools are government and / or government-aided managements. Likewise, a huge 86.40% of upper primary schools have less than 200 working days (government and aided schools).
The percentage of “single-teacher schools” in the primary schools stands at 3.99%. In facilities, only 35.27% of schools have electricity connection. The total number of teachers in the schools of the state stands at 25, 382 while the number of teachers available in government schools is 18, 516, the report states.
Educational development index ranking for Nagaland is also low. For primary-level schools the development index is 26. The Educational development index for Nagaland’s upper primary level schools is rank 15, 28, 23, and 27 each for access, infrastructure, teacher and outcome, respectively.
The report covered schools across Nagaland’s 11 districts. The number of schools imparting elementary education under the District Information System for Education is 3, 320, the report states. The number of government schools in the state is 2, 603 while the number of government-recognized private schools is 717. The rural areas have 2, 829 schools in total, the report added.
