DIMAPUR — The English and Commerce departments of MGM College organised a transformative educational tour to Sikkim from June 18 to the 22nd.


An update from the college stated that the trip provided an exceptional opportunity for students to blend academic learning with real-world exposure, adventure and cultural enrichment in the heart of the eastern Himalayas.


On day-one, the team visited Rumtek and Enchey monasteries in Gangtok to understand Buddhist philosophy, architecture and spiritual heritage. At the Himalayan Zoological Park, the students also encountered rare and endangered Himalayan wildlife including the red panda, gaining insights into ecological preservation and biodiversity.

On day-two, the team visited the historic Nathula Pass, situated on the Indo-China border and Tsomgo Lake, a high-altitude glacial lake at 12,313 feet above sea-level, which offered firsthand lessons in geography, geology and international boundaries.

It added that a visit to the Baba Harbhajan Singh Memorial added a dimension of military history and local legends.


On day-three, the team undertook a trip to Yumthang Valley, renowned as the "Valley of Flowers," exposing the students to alpine ecosystems and the importance of biodiversity conservation.


Report also stated that the team engaged with members of Sikkim’s diverse communities namely Lepcha, Bhutia and Nepali, thereby enabling meaningful cultural exchange and sociological understanding. It added that visits to local markets revealed the region’s flourishing handicraft industry and highlighted tourism's role in Sikkim’s growing economy.


It stated that the tour inculcated deeper awareness of the Himalayan geography including glacial systems, endemic flora/fauna and environmental sustainability. It also enabled them to understand Sikkim’s unique religious heritage and multicultural social fabric.


It mentioned that the educational tour to Sikkim was not just a journey through landscapes but also a journey of the mind and heart. It added that the fusion of academic insight and experiential learning left an indelible mark on all participants.
