Metümnyo Festival was celebrated at Pungro town with calls to preserve brotherhood, unity and forgiveness while keeping the cultural traditions of the Yimkhiung Naga community alive.
DIMAPUR — Metümnyo, one of the major festivals of the Yimkhiung Naga tribe, was celebrated at the Multipurpose Hall, Pungro town, on Saturday.
The celebration was hosted by S Kiusumew Yimchunger, Advisor for Fire & Emergency Services, Home Guards & Civil Defence, and Relief & Rehabilitation, and organised by the Pungro Town Festival Committee.
Addressing the gathering, Kiusumew urged the people to celebrate Metümnyo in its modern form while preserving its spirit of brotherhood, unity and forgiveness.
He said these values would give the festival its true meaning, according to a DIPR report.
The celebration began with an invocation by Rev. Fr. Dr. Vemedo Joseph, Parish Priest of St. Paul Parish, Pungro, seeking God’s blessings.
This was followed by a melody presented by the Pungro town GBs.
Short speeches were delivered by ADC Pungro Hotolu Sema, SDPO Pungro Y Ashito Aye, and Makezho, executive chairman of the Yimkhiung Tribal Council (YTC).

The speakers highlighted the significance of Metümnyo as an occasion to preserve cultural roots, strengthen community bonds and bridge the glorious past with a hopeful future.
The history and origin of the Metümnyo festival were narrated by Yansomong, head GB of Pungro town.
The programme concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Joshua K, secretary of the festival committee, followed by a cultural dance performance by the Pongthu Cultural Troupe of Pungro town.
The celebration concluded with a festival feast at the advisor’s residence.
