Dimapur, November 29: A total of 449 patients including 197 males and 252 females availed the free medical treatment during the three day free medical camp con ducted by Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) at District Hospital Dimapur which concluded on November 29.
Interacting with Eastern Mirror, Team Leader of Dimapur Neeta More, who is also the Executive Director of CPAA, said 151 patients required follow up mostly for tobacco habitués while one person was detected with cancer.
Neeta More said the three day medical camp witnessed 95% of tobacco related cases. More remarked that substance use in Dimapur itself was alarming and more upsetting as people are found taking tobacco inside hospital vicinity.
She also pointed out that the beetle nut farming in the State is huge which is also indirectly affecting people in consumption of tobacco. More, sharing concern over the high use of tobacco in the State, opined there should be some stringent planning to control the menace together with the government and the NTCP involving local celebrities.
“Easy availability of tobacco products and absence of strict rules to ban products are proving costly for the health of the people,” said More.
She said people should come forward against tobacco and promote activity from village level to eradicate tobacco use.
The three day cancer screening and early detection camp was conducted by Cancer Patients Aid Association (CPAA) sponsored by Universal Comfort Products Limited (UCPL), wholly owned by Voltas limited and supported by Government of Nagaland. It may be noted that the camp was initiated by the State Governor PB Acharya and organised by Rotary Club of Bombay North and Rotary Club of Nariman Point.
To mark the end of their benevolent act, the team will also conduct free medical camp for the jawans of Dimapur on November 30 at Circuit House Dimapur.
Meanwhile, the four day medical camp, which commenced on November 26 at Naga Hospital Kohima, concluded on November 29.
A team of five doctors performed surgeries, echocardiology, ultrasonography and distributed free medicines to the patients.
On the concluding day, Dr. Suparna Nirgudkar, MD (Med) and consultant physician, stated that maximum people were found to be treated with lifestyle diseases such as diabetes, heart problems and respiratory ailments. She also said six surgeries were while more than sixty sonography of abdomen were performed during the camp.
Team Leader Dr. HS Palep said the free medical camp was organised through the initiative of the State Governor PB Acharya in collaboration with Foundation of Dr. Keditsu, local leading gynecologists, Rotary Club of Bombay North and Indian National Fellowship Centre. He stated that hundreds of patients were treated and free medicine was distributed.
