Dimapur, June 14 (EMN): A training programme for medical officers and health workers on Rotavirus Vaccine (RV) was held from June 11 to 13 at World Vision’s conference hall in Mon town.
Prior to the training, the District Task Force (DTF) on immunisation also held a meeting in the conference hall of the Deputy Commissioner’ office on June 4.
During the meeting, DPO (RCH and UIP) Dr. Shashinle explained that Rotavirus is a contagious virus that causes diarrhoea. It is one of the most common causes of diarrhoea in infants and children below the age of one year causing 75% of deaths annually.
Dr. Sashinle also asserted that receiving Rotavirus vaccine does not mean that the child would not be affected by diarrhoea but could prevent 45% of the risk of diarrhoea. She also mentioned that the vaccine would be given to infants at 6, 10 and 14 weeks.
Topics such as introduction of RV and its impact, diarrhoea and its prevention and management, cold chain and vaccine logistic management, monitoring of RV, Universal Immunisation Programme (UIP), safe injection and waste disposal, diseases prevented by vaccination and micro-planning were covered during the training. The training also included pre-tests, post-tests, role plays, discussion hours and short videos on immunisation. The resource persons were Dr. Rio, SMO (UIP); Kenei, CCO; Dr. Shashinle, DPO (RCH & UIP); Dr. Chenjei, MO Phomching PHC; Dr. Shokwang, MO Chen PHC; and Dr. Methna, MO Tizit PHC.
Medical Officers and nurses from all the health units including District Programme Manager, Block Programme Managers, District Community Mobiliser, VCCM, IEC personnel, vaccinators and Asha coordinators attended the training.
