Mokokchung, Oct. 18 (EMN): Underdogs Super Vene progressed into the quarter-final of the ongoing MDFA Trophy after beating YD Marepkong 2-1 at Imkongmeren Sports Complex on October 18.
Following Friday’s win, Super Vene was pushed to second position in Poll A chart with six points on the table from three matches. The team will now face Pool B topper Alempang YD in the quarter-final.
Merenlemba scored the first goal for Marepkong in the 28th minute but Super Vene equalised after Suponglemba scored seven minutes before break. Marepkong’s prospect looked dim after a spot-kick was awarded against it just a few minutes into second half of the game. Meyisemba converted it into a goal in the 38th minute to put Super Vene ahead.
In the second match of the day, Moanungsang MSC booked their place in the quarter-final as Pool C runners-up, thanks to a goalless draw with NUSU FT on Friday.
The match was a showdown between “must-win” for NUSU and a draw for Moanungsang to advance to the next round of the tournament. Both teams accumulated equal points from their previous matches, but Moanungsang had the advantage over three-goal difference.
NUSU got a few chances to take the lead but Moanungsang defenders somehow managed to deny them to score. With the teams failing to break the deadlock after the full time, Moasangnung got its berth in the quarter-final.
Longshin and Imsulemba of Moanungsang MSC and Imrongtuba of NUSU FT were awarded yellow card during the match.
Moanungsang will now take on Pool D toppers Telongjem FC in the quarter-final.
