Kohima, Aug. 23 (EMN): Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman extended an invitation to students from Nagaland to either Delhi or Bengaluru to learn how science is perceived by the students from those cities.
Her statement came after learning that students from Nagaland dreaded the subjects of Mathematics and Science, during her three-day visit.
Addressing students at Dr. Neilhouzhü Kire Govt. Hr. Sec. School in Kohima on Tuesday, she told legislators and officials present at the gathering; ‘If after holding a competition, choose 10 to 12 students and come to Delhi and Bengaluru’.
“Meet up with the students of similar classes and levels and understand from them what they have done, what they have learned from, what science is perceived by them, and how they are handling it. That kind of exchange will always widen their perspective”, Sitharaman said.
She added that once one understands science, it is always possible to be creative and apply it in various different ways.
‘But all these are through hands-on experience which is lacking and should be provided with’, she said.
Sitaraman further stated that there is a combination between science and arts, and advised not to “compartmentalise everything”.
“The MNCs, big businesses to invest in schools and to skill children in schools is a fantastic thing especially in Nagaland who are looking for more opportunities to have better opportunities and skills,” she said.
She also advised students to follow “OPQRS”, an attribution which she coined. She told them to observe things and cultivate that habit. Students should play with others as that builds one’s personality and helps in understanding the situation. Question things and read at least half an hour a day and have self-confidence. One may have brilliant ideas but unless they speak up it’s not going to help, she added.
The Union minister also interacted with the students from different schools in Kohima.
