Memorandum to be submitted to the President of India after public march
Dimapur, Feb. 6 (EMN): In an attempt to thwart the central government’s plan to pass the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 (CAB) in the ongoing Rajya Sabha session, the Joint Committee on Prevention of Illegal Immigration (JCPI) has called for a “public march” from Old MLA Junction to Raj Bhavan in the state capital Kohima on Feb. 8 at 11 am.
The JCPI, which is backed by the Nagaland GB Federation (NGBF), has said in a statement that a memorandum will be submitted to the President of India after the mass rally, urging him to halt the controversial bill from being passed in the Upper House of the Parliament during the ongoing session and “not to give his assent in case an ordinance is passed by the Cabinet bypassing the Rajya Sabha.”
The joint committee has requested Angami, Ao, Sumi, Lotha, and Chakhesang tribes in Dimapur to sent 15 representatives each, and the remaining tribes from the state to send 10 representatives each to “this epoch-making public march.” It has also asked all the respective presidents of Dimapur-based tribal bodies under the Naga Council to submit the names of their representatives to the Naga Council office on Feb. 7 so that transportation arrangements can be made.
Describing the Gaon Burahs as the “guardians of our society”, JCPI said that the way “the GBs have taken the burden of addressing burning issues, notably the CAB and Naga political settlement” is laudable.
