Kohima, Sep. 26 (EMN):
Rhitsho Mero scored eight and Khwethelhi Thopi added three goals as Kohima Eagles hammered Midland Youth Organisation 15-0 in their first match of the ongoing 19th NSF Martyrs' Memorial Trophy Football Tournament here at the Kohima local ground on Wednesday.
It was the biggest win in the history of NSF trophy, as they become the first team to score 15 goals with Rhitsho Mero adding eight goals in a single match.
Kohima Eagles scored eight goals in the first half and added seven more in the second half; Midland Youth Organisation were only to blame themselves for the huge defeat as they didn't defend the score despite eight down in the first half to suffer the biggest defeat in the NSF history.
MYO team managed to register only two goals on target as the goalkeeper Rajusituo Nagi of KEFC kept his clean sheet in the first match.
Kohima Eagles FC players unselfishly set up Mero to score eight goals in the match, his goal came in the 7th, 24th, 31st, 33rd, 49th, 65th, 78th, and 79th minute, while Thopi scored his hat-trick in the 21st, 57th, and 83rd minute and a goal each from Keneinguze Pienyii (14th), Petevizo Kezieo (29th), Menguzelie Rutsa (41st) Noune Medoze (89th) completed the rout.
With Mero’s goal galore in the first match, he is likely to be highest goal scorer with five matches remaining if they can win all the matches of the tournament.
Kohima Eagles FC will take on Rusoma VYSA on Oct. 4 in the second round.
In the other match, Phezhu Boys FC Jotsoma beat Friends United FC by a solitary goal. The lone goal was scored by Namtuba in the 60th minute. Hard luck for Friends United as captain Khongpe failed to score when they got a penalty but missed the shot in the first half to end their saga in the tournament.
Phezhu Boys will clash against Rangers FC Medziphema on October 3 in the next round.
