A judicial inquiry commission (JIC) headed by retired Gauhati High Court Judge Justice BD Agarwal, which is probing the ghastly March 5 incident wherein Syed Sarif Khan, a rape accused was dragged out of Central Jail Dimapur and lynched by a mob, visited the Jail for preliminary spot verification today.
The inquiry commission chairman, accompanied by retired district and sessions judge Veprasa Nyekha as a member, tried to ascertain the circumstances and lapses leading to the incident of vandalism and forcible entry into the Dimapur Central Jail by a mob and killing of an under-trial prisoner in the violence at City Tower three months ago.
The commission which declined to comment on the development of the case to media persons, however said, the status of the enquiry will be updated soon. The commission inspected the conditions of the central jail and interacted with prisoners.
Agarwal was seemingly dissatisfied with the security system of the jail. He said, the jail walls and other barriers were not upto the set standards and that any prisoner could make easy escape.
When the jail authorities were asked whether they were well-equipped with arms on the day of jailbreak, the authorities regretted that jail police were not provided with guns by the state government.
The commission identifying the varied locations headed off to City Tower primarily to calculate the time frame taken on that day by the mob to reach the spot by dragging Syed Sarif Khan before lynching.
