Mao Union Kohima celebrated Chüthuni festival at Naga Solidarity Park on January 7. Leaders highlighted Mao-Angami brotherhood and Tenyidie language.

KOHIMA — The Mao Union Kohima celebrated the Chüthuni festival on the theme "Treasuring tradition, celebrating identity" at the Naga Solidarity Park, Kohima, on Wednesday.
Chüthuni, celebrated by the Mao people over five days, is a festival of thanksgiving and celebration of the achievements of the preceding year.
The festival was attended by the Mao people of Kohima and invitees from Kohima village and others.
Losü Dikho, MLA, 48th Mao AC, the special guest of the programme, expressed gratitude to the leaders from Kohima Village and noted how the Mao people are fortunate to be brothers and neighbours with them.
He reminded that since time immemorial, the relationship of the Mao and Angami has been that of brothers, and so although sometimes they come across temporary problems, they should all understand. He opined that the relationship and understanding that they have will continue.

He mentioned that the Chüthuni festival is not recognised even in Manipur, but in Nagaland, it is recognised and celebrated as a restricted holiday, which is a big message for the people in Manipur as well.
He told the leaders of Kohima village that despite the shortcomings and weaknesses, they understand them so well and thus commented that they will remember their love for the Mao people and will continue to support their leadership.

He further stated that they have the ambition and belief to build relationships culturally, and therefore they are seriously thinking of initiating the learning of Tenyidie as a common language for Tenyimi people.
"We also want to have interaction with the youths of the Tenyidie people to learn the language. This will help us to grow together as one," he added.

He cited that without having a common lingua franca, it is not easy, and this is the best way. He further asked the Angami and Mao communities to support each other.
MLA Dr. Tseilhoutuo Rhütso, in his short speech, expressed that the festival is a time to celebrate as well as renew friendship and forgive if there are any misunderstandings. He also appreciated the Mao community for their hard work, citing that they are working at the grassroots level and in the central government and are leading in the business community and political field as well.
Helievio Solo, chairman of Kohima Village Council, on behalf of Kohima village, thanked the members of the Mao community for their friendship and brotherhood. He said that as a family, they have differences at times, but it should not weaken the resilience and support for each other.
He appreciated that the Mao people are serving as a powerful medium for preserving tradition and fostering social unity.
During the festival, folk songs and folk dances were presented by Mary Chakre and friends and the Mao Students Union Kohima, respectively, and Chüthuni blessings were led by D Lokho.
