Imphal, Oct. 16 (EMN): Manipur’s newly created Kakching district was included in the country’s 75 digital banking units across 75 districts dedicated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday.
Chief Minister N Biren Singh attended the formal ‘Dedication of 75 digital banking units (DBUs) across 75 Districts,’ which was organised on virtual mode at State Bank of India branch at Kakching, about 45 km south of Imphal.
Speaking at a function after the video conferencing, Singh said the public can now avail banking services at their doorsteps.
He appreciated the Prime Minister for his far-sighted vision to ensure welfare of his people as the direct benefit transfer schemes had been successful in minimising corruption in the country.
He also mentioned that the state government had been putting in every effort to improve the earnings of every household and to ensure at least one member of every household get employment.
“This has also ensured that the benefits of welfare schemes reached its targeted beneficiaries without middlemen,” the chief minister said.
He also mentioned that the government has been working in coordination with certain banks to improve rural economy at grassroots level.
Singh also endorsed the suggestion of the Prime Minister for every bank to get connected with 100 businesses or shops with the objective to achieve digitisation in business transactions.
Stating that Kakching district had already achieved full digitisation in banking transactions, he informed that the government is targeting to achieve the same for Noney district by 2023.
Later, sharing photographs of the dedication function at Kakching in a tweet, Biren wrote, "The DBUs are being set up to provide digital financial literacy and awareness of cyber security, safeguards, etc. while ensuring that the advantages of digital banking are accessible to every citizen of the country."
The nationwide programme was attended through video conferencing by Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Reserve Bank of India Governor Shaktikanta Das.
