IMPHAL — Manipur’s Transport department is working to operationalise the Inter-State Bus Terminus (ISBT) for the state within a week or ten days’ time.
“We’re working on rededication of the ISBT that is likely to be within a week or ten days... We’re going to operationalise it for the entire state,” said Additional Chief Secretary of Transport, Anurag Bajpai on Sunday.
The ISBT was constructed by the Public Works Department with financial assistance from the North Eastern Council and it was inaugurated by the then Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on December 3, 2011.
However since its inauguration, it is unable to serve its purpose.
Bajpai, who is also the Principal Chief Conservator of Forest and head of Forest Force, was speaking at an interaction session of one-day media sensitisation programme on ‘Strengthening media partnership for safer roads,’ in Imphal.
Director of Transport Kh Diana Devi, Director of Information & Public Relations Ng Uttam Singh, Editors Guild Manipur president Khogendra Khomdram, Additional SP (Traffic Control Police) T Biswajit, were also present during the media sensitisation programme held as part of the National Road Safety Month 2026 on the theme ‘Sadak Suraksha Jeevan Raksha.’
Expressing concern over the lack of a proper public transport system in the state, the additional chief secretary informed that they’re also working on the development of an Inter-State Truck Terminus.
“We’ve identified three areas including one at Sekmai and Jiribam for it,” he said adding, “City bus services will also be introduced in Manipur. I seek your intervention in improving public transport.”
Currently, diesel autos, e-rickshaws, and 'Tata Magic' mini vehicles are key public transport options connecting Imphal to smaller towns, with few buses serving inter-district routes.
Stating that improving the roads, removing encroachments and reducing the number of vehicles on the roads besides regulation of the auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws will help in improving the public transport system, he added, “Introduction of city buses can give relief to the common people.”
Regarding the scrapping of old vehicles in the state, he said, “We’ve also already draft rules for scrapping old vehicles.”
Supplementing Bajpai, Transport Director Kh Diana also informed the gathering that the department, in coordination with others, is proposing incentives for old vehicle owners to buy new ones and noted there's no scrapping facility in the state.
